How to get there?
There is only one road leading to the Antelope Island. Coming from Salt Lake City, you will pass the entrance station, and pay the park entrance fee.
You will have a scenic drive through the Salt Lake for around 6.8 miles on the Antelope Island Road until you finally reach the island.
Where to find the herd of bison?
You can find the bisons all over the island. However, there are a couple of spots, where your chances are even higher. The most common places are in the south-eastern part of the island.
When you take the East Side Road up to the Fielding Garr Ranch, chances are high that you will find them!
Is it dangerous?
With up to 700 bison on this island, it is quit common to encounter these animals. But as long as you keep your respectful distance, you’ll be safe.
But if you are really unsure, it is possible to just explore the island by car, and still have a high chance to get really close!
You can find more information about safety tips on the official government website.
What else can you do?
There is plenty to do on this island. You can spend anything from two hours, or a couple of days by doing these activities:
Hiking
Camping
Bird watching
Horseback riding
Staying at the beach
Ride a bike
Watch the sunrise/sunset
When is the best time to visit?
Unlike other parks, Antelope Island State Park is accessible all year long, and every season has its own charme. It also depends on what you’re planning to do. Whether you’re only cruising around, or you go camping, we can definitely recommend staying until sunset. The colors of the sky are just incredible, and the Salt Lake mirrors them beautifully.
Special tip: If you’re visiting in summer, be prepared for tons of bugs, and mosquitos!
In summary, it has been one of our most favorite experiences so far! Please make sure to give these animals their space, and be respectful, as you are coming into their space of living. Enjoy the views and definitely come at sunset to get the moost out of this special island.
